The metaphor project was a part of my Advanced Typography Class of my Senior Year. The prompt was to take some form that told a story. Then we had to create 4 pieces that conveyed the same message. The story I chose was when I broke my leg. The first is strictly type, the person needs to read it to understand it. The Second had some playful variation on the type, where someone could get the idea of the story but still had to read it. The third one had to be more visual, type could be used but couldn't tell the story. The fourth was completely visual using forms to tell the story.
Text Only

The first is strictly type, the person needs to read it to understand it. The gradation used here feels like a sad and muted mess to match the feelings I felt when getting while breaking my leg. The text and the yellow circles are there to indicate the moment I got hit by the car. The yellow lights are an abstracted form of headlights while the type is rigid blocky to represent a bone.
Playful Text

The Second has some playful variation on the type, where someone could get the idea of the story but still has to read it. This is similar to poster 1 although, the text is now broken up to represent the breaking of structure and therefore my leg.
Text as a Form

The third one had to use the text as a visual element. The type could be used but couldn't tell the story. Cracking and the "M" in femur gets the meaning across of a leg-breaking and the use of the abstracted headlights indicates it broke because I got hit by a car.
Form Only

The fourth is completely visual using forms to tell the story. I used a fractured rectangle to represent an abstract version of a bone. Along with the headlights, people can understand without words that this tells the story of me getting hit by a car and breaking my leg.
